Mrs Osbourne, circa 1919

Vera Crichton, 23, and Nancy Cowman, 19, are listed in the NSW Police Gazette 24 March 1924 as charged, along with three others, with “conspiring together to procure a miscarriage” on a third woman. Crichton was “bound over to appear for sentence if called upon within three years”.

Peter Doyle & Caleb Williams :: from City of Shadows (Historic Houses Trust, 2005), a recollection of forensic crime photography, created by the New South Wales Police between 1912 and 1960.

was convicted of bigamy and theft. By the age of 24 she had amassed an impressive number of aliases and at least two husbands. She was described by police as ‘rather good looking’.
