The present sheet belongs to the group of drawings that the Belgian artist Félicien Rops created from around 1883 for the short story collection Les Diaboliques by Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly (1808-1889).

This lot shares its provenance with lot 48 and is mounted in an identical way, suggesting that it may have been a companion print in the 1927 Saint Etienne exhibition – one of the 14 prints by Drtikol featured in this display.
